During World War II, Dr. Ernest Braun barely escaped occupied Vienna and made his way to Rome where the Catholic cardinal protected him for two years. Because of his thorough formal education in the Naitra Yeshiva and vast knowledge of texts and Jewish Heritage, he became a translator in the Vatican Library. There, he researched ancient therapeutic properties of the Dead Sea Minerals for psoriatic sufferers as reported in ancient Jewish manuscripts.

After the 2nd World War, Dr. Braun immigrated to the US. His interest in his research grew as psoriasis sufferers flocked to the mineral rich waters of the Dead Sea for relief. He knew a Dead Sea product waiting to be created that would be of service to humanity. He began to create what he named Dead Sea Derivatives (DSD), the first therapeutic lotion made from the Dead Sea. His discovery was soon rewarded in the scientific community when the positive results of a three-month study on psoriasis sufferers in Haifa were reported in CUTIS, the American Dermatology Journal. Sophia Braun immigrated to Israel in 1968 from Poland. She continued her studies in Hebrew University of Jerusalem and in 1972 was granted Master Degree in Organic Chemistry.

Ms. Braun was among the first chemists that specialized in the field of Cosmetic Chemistry, after her two years work in Helena Rubinstein laboratories in London, holding the position of head of Research laboratories.

Upon her return to Israel in 1978 she continued the research work together with Mr. Ernest Braun on various subjects and products in the field of dermatology and OTC products. Ms. Braun is the owner of two patent inventions registered in US and in Israel.

In 2000 Ms. Braun received M.Sc. degree, accomplishing her studies in Librarianship and Informatics (Hebrew University, Jerusalem). Today she is working as medical informatics in the Life Sciences and Medical Library, Tel Aviv University.

Recently, Ms. Braun won Knesset Prize for Volunteerism, for her volunteer work at the Center for Women’s Health Information.

Considering all the above and more, the Committee decided to grant late Mr. Ernest Braun and Ms. Sophia Braun Life Achievement Award, from the Cosmetic Division of Industrial Manufacturers Association.
